How to Cite a Painting in MLA Format



Basic Information

  • Start with the artists name and the title of the painting in italics. Enter the date of the art work. If it’s unknown enter n.d. to replace the date. Provide the institutional name that is in charge of the artwork and finally the location of the institution.
    —Eakins, Thomas. Spinning. 1881. Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia.

Electronic Image

  • For an electronic image, give the artists name, the art work italicized, date it was created, the institution and the place where it is currently housed. End with the website in italics, the medium of publication and the date it was accessed.
